Review the slides prepared on Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) (Peterson).  What did you learn from JP’s presentation that you didn’t know already?

  1. What I did not know was that textbooks and materials are written to compliment the TEKS and not the other way around.

  2. The concept that the teks are made for the students have to be in " on level learning" and nowadays more and more students are not in on level learning. It is like playing game of mouse and cat.

  3. Since I am new to the education system in Texas, the entire presentation was a great learning experience for me. I did think it was interesting that the textbooks and materials are written to compliment the TEKS and not the other way around.

  4. What she put on my top of mind is who is responsible for reviewing the TEKS. Who writes them? Do they accurately meet the educational goals for the students. I know from watching several people I know in education that the TEKS are highly demanding and sometimes vague.

  5. I did not realize that, the TEKS might prove somewhat limiting, or conversely, unattainable, to students who exist outside the parameters of "on-level" learning.

  6. I think the biggest shock dealt to me in preparing those slides was the textbook issue being tailored to the TEKS and not the other way around. That's concerning...
